100 BLACK MEN OF AMERICA, INC. RECOGNIZE MOST INFLUENTIAL AT 20TH ANNIVERSARY CONFERENCE

ATLANTA, GEORGIA (June 13, 2006) During the 100 Black Men of America’s 20th Anniversary Conference, in Atlanta, Georgia, the organization recognized many of the countries most influential members of the African American community in the areas of health & wellness, philanthropy and business.

Dr. William “Bill” Cosby was awarded the Chairman’s Award for Philanthropy for his financial and personal commitment to improving the lives of our youth. The Chairman’s Legacy Award was awarded posthumously to Former Mayor Maynard Jackson, not only the business legacy that he leaves for the city of Atlanta, but for legacy that he leaves in so many that he has advised and mentored throughout his life.

The Chairman’s Award for Health & Wellness was awarded to Dr. Bettye Davis-Lewis, President of the National Nurses Association. Virgis Colbert, Retired Vice President of the Miller Brewing Company was given the Chairman’s Award for Business Leadership. The 2006 Trail Blazer Award was awarded to Dr. Mark Dean, Fellow & Vice President of IBM Almaden Research Center.

The Wimberly Award is a special award that is given to a member of the 100 Black Men of America, named after the late Bill Wimberly, a member of the organization who gave of his time and knowledge, tirelessly and unselfishly. This year the award was presented to two outstanding members who embody those characteristics, Dr. James T. Black of the 100 Black Men of Los Angeles, Inc., and Dr. Mark Alexander, of the 100 Black Men of The Bay Area, Inc.

In addition, awards were presented to the Mentees and Mentors affiliated with the 100 Black Men for their outstanding accomplishments in school and community; the awards are named after Thomas W. Dortch, Jr., past Chairman of the 100 Black Men of America, Inc.

The Mentee of the Year was awarded to Julian Brooks, of the 100 Black Men of Sacramento, Inc., while Brandon Finch, a hearing impaired young man of the 100 Black Men of Maryland, Inc., was awarded with the Honorable Mentioned Mentee of the Year Award. Col. Edward Brown of 100 Black Men of Greater Montgomery, Inc. was awarded the Mentor of the Year. This year’s Outstanding Youth Award was presented to Michael Abram Rowell, the 2005-2007 Sickle Cell Disease Association of America, Inc. (SCDAA), National Poster Child

About 100 Black Men of America, Inc.
100 Black Men was founded as an organization in New York City in 1963. The national organization, 100 Black Men of America, Inc., began with 10 chapters in 1986 as a national alliance of leading African American men of business, industry, public affairs and government.

Today, under the direction of Albert E. Dotson, Jr., the organization has 106 chapters, and growing, in the United States, England, and the Caribbean. There are members from a myriad of professions, including corporate executives, physicians, attorneys, entrepreneurs, entertainers, elected officials, professional athletes, educators and men from numerous other professions.

The 100, as it is widely known, has created programs which provide an environment where young people are encouraged and motivated to learn and achieve. Each member serves as a strong Black role model for our youth in today's society. Four For the Future and Leadership Development are the strategic areas of focus that supports the mission of the organization. Subject areas encompass Mentoring, Economic Development, Education, Health & Wellness, and the development of leaders around the world.

All of the signature programs of the 100 are contained in one of these content areas. The accomplishments made through these programs have allowed the 100 to gain notable prominence internationally as one of the world's leading organizations for mentoring African American youth.

With a mission to improve the quality of life and enhance educational opportunities for African Americans, members of the 100 serve as a strong force overcoming the cultural and financial obstacles that have limited the achievements of African American youth, particularly young African American males. The organization has made outstanding progress, proving that Blacks can, and do, excel in corporate and community leadership.
