Black Coaches Association (BCA) announces 2006 Coach of the Year Recipients Award recipients to be honored during the BCA National Convention and Expo in June, 2006

INDIANAPOLIS –The Annual Black Coaches Association (BCA) Awards Banquet will be held on Friday, June 2, at the Doral Golf Resort & Spa in conjunction with the BCA National Convention and Expo.

The 2006 award recipients are: Shann Hart, IUPUI Women’s Head Basketball Coach, John Thompson III, Georgetown University Men’s Basketball Head Coach, Craig Littlepage, University of Virginia Athletic Director and Ted Ginn Sr., Glenville High School Football Coach in Cleveland, OH. Each of the recipients will be honored for their contributions of excelling in athletics, coaching or administration.

All award recipients were nominated and selected by BCA member votes. For each award the following criteria was established: team success during the current season, team improvement from previous season, fulfillment of team potential and professional manner and attitude of a coach.

According to Floyd Keith, BCA Executive Director, each of the selected candidates exemplifies the values and mission of the BCA. “Our honorees are not just successful professionals, but they are also outstanding people,” he said. “Our membership has chosen well.”

Hart’s career highlights include being recognized as Mid-Continent Conference Coach of the Year in 2006. In addition, Hart guided the IUPUI Jaguars to one of the best W-L record turnarounds in the country this past season. IUPUI’s 11-5 league record earned them the No. 2 seed in the Mid-Continent Conference Tournament. Coach Hart will receive the BCA Female Coach of the Year Award.

Thompson has served as the head men’s basketball coach at Georgetown University for years. His forceful impact has helped the Hoyas achieve program history by producing one of the most successful years in program’s history. The solid team effort also landed them an appearance in the sweet sixteen NCAA tournaments.

Thompson finished the 2005-2006 seasons with a 23-10 overall record and was ranked 16 in the country when the season final polls were released. He will receive the “Fritz” Pollard BCA Male Coach of the Year Award, which is sponsored annually by Brown University.

Littlepage, who was the first African American athletics director in Atlantic Coast Conference history, was named the Black Coaches Association's "Athletics Administrator of the Year" in June of 2003. Achieving a repeat, Littlepage is noted for being committed to preserving and building on University of Virginia’s longstanding tradition of academic and athletic excellence.

In March of 2005, he was named one of Black Enterprise Magazine's “Most Powerful African Americans in Sports.” More recently, Littlepage served as the NCAA Selection Chair for the 2006 Men’s Final Four Tournament. He will be recognized as the BCA Administrator of the Year.

Ted Ginn Sr. became head football coach at Cleveland, OH Glenville High School in 1997. Although he has won eight consecutive league titles and was nationally ranked during the 2005 season, he continues to help inner city athletes through the Ted Ginn Sr. Foundation by hosting Ginn “Road to Opportunity” Division 1 – Combine Tour.

Last year, Ginn’s athletes traveled 12 days to meet and workout for coaches at Notre Dame, Purdue, Ohio State, Univ. of Wisconsin and Univ. of Illinois; outstandingly, 25 out of 37 student- athletes received scholarships. In total, he has assisted more than 100 student athletes attend college. Ted Ginn Sr. is the 2006 BCA High School Coach of the Year.

The BCA convention will be held in Miami, Fl, from May 31 to June 3, 2006 at the Doral Golf Resort & Spa. Themed “Empowering our Leadership with Accountability & Action”, it will host an array of workshops that will echo the convention theme and will highlight interactive sessions on professional development, career advancement steps and personal upward mobility.
