(BPRW) Difficulties Recent College Graduates Face: The Black Student Perspective
(BLACK PR WIRE/FAMU-TALLAHASSEE) – Recent college graduates are realizing that you may need more than a college diploma to get a job after graduation, especially in an economic downturn.
Bernie Lauredan, a recent graduate of New York University, suggests college students need to have focus and narrow their options. “I know a lot of college students who are looking for any job opening,” Lauredan said. “When you don’t have a focus, you start to spread yourself too thin and you don’t allow yourself to stand out to one particular company.”
Companies look for well-qualified employees. It’s imperative that you research companies and show that you really want to work for their company. Vannessa Lemaistre, a recent graduate of Florida A&M University, advises college students on the importance of finding work prior to graduation to establish contacts. “It is important to try and get a job before you graduate, even if it’s just part time,” Lemaistre said. “College students need to network as much as they can because it all boils down to who you know.”
The effect of the shortage of viable job offers is leading some recent college graduates to rely on graduate school as an option until the job market improves. Philip Dubois, a graduate public health student at Florida State University, said that it is always a good idea to further education. “Major in something that you’re interested in and make a specific plan,” Dubois said. “Do what is necessary and give yourself the best chances in succeeding with your plan.”
