(BPRW) Education in the Black Community
(BLACK PR WIRE/BCW-GREENSBORO) – African Americans have always had many challenges to overcome, but the one that many people believe to be the solution into fixing the rest of our problems is education. President Obama easily cited education as the most important issue for the black community.
He said in an Essence magazine article, “If we close the achievement gap, then a big chunk of economic inequality in this society is diminished.” The president is right. Once we fix education in the black communities, it will help out with the economic inequality as well as just the way African Americans are perceived in our society. Better teachers and definitely more resources is the key to making education not an issue anymore.
In a study from the National Center of Education Statistics, African Americans continue to score lower in reading and math than whites. Clearly something needs to be done and soon. As long as this has been going on in the black community, there is no reason why now in the year 2010 blacks are still scoring lower.
It is good to see that the president has many proposals and is ready to help make a difference, but he can’t do it alone. The black community needs to have a changed attitude when it comes to education. It can’t just be something we have to do, but something we want to do, to achieve and be successful.
