The Right to Judge

Judges play an important and integral part in the common law system, as it has evolved. In the common law system, a judge is called upon to find the law, to interpret it, to articulate it, and then to apply it to the fact situation presented in the court room. Whether they are trying a case involving treason, bribery, robbery, or other high crimes and misdemeanors, African American judges have a right to judge.

According to www.uscourts.gov, a judge should uphold the integrity and independence of the judiciary. A judge should also perform the duties of the office impartially and diligently.

The work of the federal courts touches upon many of the most significant issues affecting the American people. We are so proud of our African American judges for serving the public by providing just and timely resolution of all matters before the courts.

There is even a book commemorating Black judges entitled Black Judges In America®. This is the nation's only comprehensive book that features pictures and biographical data on currently sitting African-American judges throughout the country.

While many of us should try not to judge, African American judges do have the right to judge. So, let’s continue to support them, as they dispense justice for all. It should be our honor!
