(BPRW) LOCAL LAWYER HONORED AS RISING STAR BY BROWARD COUNTY WOMEN'S HISTORY COALITION

Shaheewa Jarrett Gelin recognized at the Women's Hall of Fame Luncheon

(Black PR Wire) -- Deerfield Beach, March 22, 2015 -- Shaheewa Jarrett Gelin was recognized for her volunteer work on voter registration, healthcare, and for mentoring at-risk youth.

During Women’s History Month, the Broward County Women’s History Coalition holds its annual Women’s Hall of Fame Luncheon at the Deer Creek County Club. For the last two years, the group has recognized young professionals who have impacted the community and have a promising future. This year Shaheewa Jarrett Gelin was selected as the 2015 Rising Star.

Shaheewa has been a resident of Broward County since 1989 and has volunteered since her high school years. Most recently, she organized 30 Affordable Care Act (ACA) presentations at libraries all over the county for the League of Women Voters in 2013. Prior to the deadline in 2014, she coordinated 15 more educational presentations for the public, which included partnering with other community groups and Broward County Government.

In addition, Shaheewa was acknowledged for her work with young people. She is the CEO of the Youth survivors Foundation, a non-profit she started years ago. She started a mentoring program and speaker series at Parkway Middle School and at Washington Park in Hollywood, FL. All programs target abused, neglected, homeless, or otherwise troubled youth. The mentor program focuses on offering personal and practical solutions to each child, while the speaker series inspires the children by allowing them to interact with a wide variety of professionals.
