Changes for a Healthier Life

(Black PR Wire) By this point almost everyone is well aware of the obesity crisis this nation and other nations are facing. Childhood obesity is on the rise as well as. Over processed, “fast foods” are cheaper and easier to incorporate into many people’s busy lifestyles.

The frightening aspect of this obese and overweight epidemic is its negative effects on people’s health and well-being. Overweight children face the risk of heart attack and stroke, as well as Type II diabetes. Plus, those who are overweight or obese during childhood are much more likely to carry the extra pounds into adulthood, inevitably negatively affecting their health. Reports from the New England Journal of medicine and the Bibbins-Domingo's report have come to similar conclusions in this regard. Dr. Bibbins-Domingo of San Francisco General Hospital alongside colleagues from Columbia University estimates that 44% of women and 37% of men in the United States will be obese by the year 2020 negatively.

Obesity is linked with heart disease and many other related diseases thus these groups of people will be viewed by the medical community as “ill.” There are currently numerous movements to combat obesity in children and adults. The most aggressive movements involve a complete change in the way many of us eat. Vegetarianism is gaining momentum once again with celebrities such as African American actor Forest Whitaker on board and vegans promoting a lifestyle free of all animal products are claiming their eating habits as the healthiest.

Vegans consume no foods derived from animals such as milk, cheese or honey, maintaining a healthy balance with beans, soy and tofu products and fruits and vegetables. Americans afraid to give up their traditional steaks and fried chicken don’t need to be afraid however, changes in lifestyle for the better can be gradual, healthy and still incorporate some of the not quite as healthy food favorites into the mix every now and again. Sometimes it can be a hard balance of what we enjoy and what is good for us. With a little education on eating right I’m sure that African Americans and all others alike can help stop obesity from dominating the headlines.
