- NABJ Members and Friends Encouraged to Support Initiative by Making Donations -

(BLACK PR WIRE) – WASHINGTON, D.C. – The National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) is proud to announce the continuation of its annual service efforts, which are designed to support the community in our convention host city. Our project already underway in the greater Boston area ahead of the 2014 convention is the "Pine Street Project" which has allowed NABJ to coordinate assistance for U.S. military veterans who are in need of various services and support. In the weeks ahead NABJ will outline different ways in which our members will be able to perform community service to assist other veterans, which will culminate at the association’s annual convention.

"As a veteran myself I am proud that NABJ has been able to assist the Pine Street Inn secure much needed support for veterans in need," said NABJ President Bob Butler. "As the current focus on the military health care crisis has underscored, the service and sacrifice of the men and women who have served this country should not be forgotten. We should tell their stories which will help them to get the help they have earned."

Through NABJ’s collaboration with long time partner, Rent-A- Center, NABJ is able to assist U.S. Army veteran Allen Kelly, who was homeless, and was able to get back on his feet with the assistance of Pine Street Inn, a Boston-based homeless services agency. Allen recently moved into an apartment and now is able to have new furnishings. Fellow Army veteran Stacey Alestock will be moving into a new apartment in the near future.

"Pine Street Inn is extremely grateful to the National Association of Black Journalists for coordinating the generous furniture donation from Rent-A-Center for two formerly homeless U.S. veterans who are moving into permanent housing," said Pine Street President Lyndia Downie. "The support we receive from friends like these helps make our work of ending homelessness possible," she added.

NABJ’s Day of Service has become a part of NABJ’s annual convention, which allows of members to gain a greater appreciation for the community’s, which become NABJ’s home away from home for the week, and communities where we also have chapters that already have strong ties to the community.
