(BLACK PR WIRE) – Miami, Feb. 22, 2013 – Black History Month at Miami Dade College’s (MDC) North Campus will culminate with a deeply moving re-enactment of the 1963 March on Washington. The community is invited to join hundreds of students, faculty and staff in the re-enactment, which will take place on Thursday, Feb. 28, at 11 a.m., at MDC’s North Campus, 11380 NW 27th Avenue. The event is free and open to the public.
The March will begin at the Campus’ outdoor Niños Sculpture plaza, and proceed along East Road and through the Campus. The March will culminate lakeside at the Arts Complex (Building 5), where North Campus Chamber Singers will lead participants in spiritual songs followed by a student’s delivery of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s I Have a Dream speech.
Said North Campus President Dr. José A. Vicente: “Student learning is a cornerstone of our mission at the College, and there is profound value in enabling our students to experience first-hand one of the most significant historic occasions in the U.S.”
The March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, a peaceful demonstration to promote civil rights and equality for African-Americans, took place on August 28, 1963. It symbolized hope and courage for African-Americans in the United States and gave a positive voice that resonated throughout our nation.
On that day, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. reminded America of the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863, and the need to continue to be vigilant about moving the U.S. toward full and complete eradication of segregation and discrimination. The March set the foundation for peaceful and orderly demonstrations in America, and it was deemed as one of the highest points of the Civil Rights movement.
MDC has a long-standing tradition of celebrating Black History Month at each of its campuses.
