(Black PR Wire) MIAMI, Fla. — October marks Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and Jessie Trice Community Health System (JTCHS) is joining hundreds of health organizations across the country in reminding the community to pay attention to breast cancer, understand the risks, and take steps that may help prevent or detect it early.
Aside from skin cancers, breast cancer is the most frequent cancer among women in the U.S., according to the American Cancer Society. Black women face the highest death rate from the disease, highlighting the critical need for a proactive approach.
“Knowledge is power,” said Dr. Joycelyn Lawrence, chief medical officer of JTCHS . “By being aware of the risk factors and symptoms and taking action through regular screenings, women can make a critical difference in their long-term health. Although screening cannot prevent breast cancer, it can help detect it early, when it is easier to treat.”
Symptoms to watch for include changes in the size or shape of the breast, pain in any area of the breast, nipple discharge other than breast milk, or a new lump in the breast or underarm. Anyone experiencing these symptoms should see a doctor right away.
Regular screenings and mammograms remain the most effective tools for detecting breast cancer at an early stage, when treatment is more likely to be successful. JTCHS encourages the community to stay informed, perform self-exams, and consult their healthcare provider promptly if any changes are noticed.
